Choosing a pool pump for a Gauteng pool
A pump has one job: push the whole volume of your pool through the filter often enough to keep the water clear. Bigger is not better. A motor too strong for its filter forces water through the sand so fast that it channels and lets dirt past, and it wastes electricity doing it. One that is too small leaves corners of the pool where water barely moves. Match the pump to the filter first, then to the volume of water.
Single-speed pumps such as the Speck Porpoise, Quality Swimflo and EartheCo ranges are simple, robust and easy to repair. Variable-speed and inverter pumps, including the Aquagem InverEco and InverCaptain and the Speck Badu ECO Touch and Magic 6, idle along at low speed for most of the day and only speed up for backwashing or the cleaner. On the Highveld, where the pool pump is often one of the largest loads on a household bill, that slow running is where the saving comes from.
Load-shedding and summer lightning are hard on motors. A pump that hums but will not start usually has a failed capacitor, and one that screeches has worn bearings. Both are repairable, and an impeller jammed with leaves is far more common than a burnt-out motor.
- Read the kW figure and the filter size off your existing equipment before you buy.
- A pump mounted above the water level must self-prime, so keep the lid O-ring clean and lightly lubricated.
- Empty the leaf basket weekly in summer; a blocked basket makes the motor run hot.
- Spa pumps and air blowers suit jacuzzi jets, not pool circulation.
