Heat pump or solar panels for a Highveld pool
Highveld nights are cold well into spring and again from autumn, so an unheated pool is often too chilly to enjoy outside the warmest months. There are two practical ways to stretch the swimming season, solar panels and heat pumps, and owners who heat seriously usually pair either one with a cover.
Sun Command solar panels pass pool water through black collectors on a sunny roof. Beyond the pump they cost nothing to run, but they need generous roof space, ideally facing north with no shade from trees, and they only add heat while the sun is on them. Cloudy spells and cold evenings are their weak point.
ITS inverter heat pumps work like an air conditioner in reverse, drawing warmth out of the air and into the water. An inverter unit slows down once the pool reaches temperature, which keeps running costs moderate, and it keeps heating on overcast days and after dark. Sizing depends on the pool's volume, the temperature you want and how early in the season you plan to swim. An undersized unit runs all day and never quite gets there, so size it to the pool rather than the budget.
- Cover a heated pool at night, or most of the day's heat escapes before morning.
- Site a heat pump where air can circulate around it, away from bedroom windows, because the fan makes some noise.
- Heat pumps need steady water flow; a dirty filter or full pump basket cuts their output.
- Plan the electrical supply and plumbing bypass before the unit arrives.
