Robotic or suction cleaner: matching the machine to your pool
Suction cleaners such as the Kreepy Krauly Dominator, Tiger Shark and Pro, and the Zodiac AX20 Activ, plug into the weir and are driven by your pool pump. They have few moving parts and add nothing to the electricity bill beyond the pump that is already running, but they need strong suction, and everything they pick up ends in the pump basket and the filter.
Robotic cleaners from Aiper and Dolphin carry their own motor and filter bag. They climb walls, scrub the waterline and keep debris out of the pool filter altogether, which means less backwashing and less water lost. Cordless robots such as the Aiper Scuba range run off a rechargeable battery with no cable across the paving, while the Dolphin models plug into a low-voltage power supply, and several offer a built-in timer.
Highveld storms can drop a season's worth of leaves and jacaranda blossom into a pool in one afternoon. No cleaner handles a heavy leaf load gracefully, so a leaf net, or a leaf catcher fitted in the suction line, earns its place next to whichever machine you choose.
- Steep steps, tight corners and irregular shapes trip up some suction models, so consider your pool's shape.
- Replace worn diaphragms, tyres and cracked hose sections before they suck air into the system.
- Lay a new suction hose straight in the sun for an hour before first use.
- Rinse a robot's filter after each run and store it out of direct sun.
- The Aiper Pilot X1 handheld vacuum reaches steps and spa seats that bigger cleaners miss.
