What a pool cover does for water, heat and safety
An open pool on the Highveld loses a surprising amount of water to evaporation, particularly through the dry, windy months, and with that water goes warmth and the chlorine you paid for. A cover cuts those losses, keeps leaves and dust out and lightens the load on the pump, filter and cleaner.
Solar bubble blankets are the simplest choice. A 500 micron blanket stands up to our strong ultraviolet light longer than a 400 micron one, and both soak up heat during the day and hold it overnight. An aluminium roller turns taking the blanket off into a one-person job and stops it lying folded on hot paving, which is what usually ruins them.
Safety mesh covers are tensioned across the pool and anchored into the paving, strong enough to stop a child or a dog falling in. Automated slatted covers and hidden in-deck covers roll away out of sight at the turn of a key or press of a button, combining safety, heat retention and a clean look. Every pool is a different shape, so covers are made to measure: Crystal Reef measures the pool and quotes in writing before anything is cut.
- Take a blanket off when you shock-dose and leave it off until chlorine levels settle.
- Store a blanket on its roller in the shade, never folded in the sun.
- Brush leaves off a cover before rolling it back so they do not end up in the water.
- A safety cover only works when every anchor strap is fastened; check them each season.
- Less evaporation means less topping up during water restrictions.
