Sand or cartridge: picking the right pool filter
Most Gauteng pools run a sand filter, and for good reason. Sand copes well with the fine dust and pollen that blow in through the dry winter, and it is cleaned by backwashing rather than by hand. Sand filters are sold by bag count, the number of bags of filter sand the tank holds, and a higher bag count gives the water more media to pass through at a gentler pace.
Cartridge filters such as the Speck Eco Wise use pleated elements instead of sand. They catch finer particles and need no backwash water, which helps when municipal restrictions are in force, but the cartridges must be hosed down by hand and replaced in time. EartheCo combi units mount a pump and a sand filter on one base, a tidy way to replace a tired old set in one go.
Sand wears out. Over the years the grains round off and clump together with calcium from our hard water, and dirt slips straight back into the pool. If the water stays dull although the chemistry is right and the pump runs properly, suspect the sand.
- Size the filter to the pump as well as the pool, so the flow sits comfortably inside what the tank can handle.
- Backwash when the pressure gauge climbs clearly above its clean reading, then rinse before switching back to filter.
- Water running to waste in the filter position usually means a worn spider gasket in the multiport valve.
- The Ultra Zap bio filters and UV units and the Speck BADU Koi filters are made for fish ponds, not chlorinated pools.
