Pool lights, transformers and DB boxes done safely
Water and mains power do not mix, which is why pool lights run on low voltage through a transformer, and why the transformer, timer and earth-leakage protection belong in a weatherproof DB box beside the equipment. Most dead pool lights in older Gauteng homes are halogen units whose lamp, seal or transformer has finally given up after years of storms and power cuts.
An LED retro-fit light such as the IPP colour-changing replacement fits many existing light niches, draws a fraction of the power of an old halogen lamp and offers a choice of colours. Before buying, check two things: the niche the light must fit into, and the transformer feeding it. LEDs need a compatible low-voltage supply, and an old transformer may be the wrong type or output for the new lamp.
DB boxes house the switching, timers and protection that keep pool equipment running on schedule. A spa with a circulation pump and an air blower needs a box built for two pumps, such as the Quality spa DB box, so neither load overloads a shared circuit.
- Switch off at the DB box before touching any light, fitting or cable near the water.
- Press the test button on the earth-leakage unit regularly to confirm it trips.
- A light that flickers or trips the power usually has water inside; stop using it until it has been checked.
- Keep DB box doors closed and sealed against rain and ants, which nest in warm electrical boxes.
- Have new pool wiring done by a qualified electrician.
