Estate pools: Woodhill, Silver Lakes, Six Fountains and Mooikloof

The large lifestyle and golf estates in the east have well-built pools, often with heated water, water features and automated equipment, and they usually have strict rules for contractors. Expect to register us with estate security before our first visit. Some estates limit contractor hours or require vehicles to be booked in the day before.

Pools like these rarely need rescuing. What they need is consistency: water balanced every week, equipment checked before small faults grow, and someone who notices that the heat pump is short-cycling or the chlorinator reading has dropped. That is exactly what a weekly plan is for.

Borehole water on the smallholdings

Properties on smallholdings and some estates on the eastern fringe top their pools up from a borehole. Borehole water can carry dissolved iron and manganese, which are invisible going in and then oxidise when chlorine hits them — the water turns brown, green-brown or rusty, and stains appear on the plaster, especially around the steps and returns. It often looks like algae and is treated like algae, which does not help.

If your pool changes colour straight after a top-up, or stains appear that do not brush off, tell us it is on borehole water. The treatment is different: a metal sequestrant to hold the metals in solution, and in stubborn cases an acid wash to remove the staining once the source is under control.

Faerie Glen, Moreleta Park and Garsfontein: the family pool belt

The suburbs south and east of Menlyn — Faerie Glen, Moreleta Park, Garsfontein, Elarduspark, Constantia Park — are full of family homes with medium-sized pools that get used hard in December. These are the pools where a missed week in summer turns into a green pool, and where a tired pump or a filter that has not had its sand changed shows up as a pool that is always slightly dull.

For most of these homes the medium weekly plan, at R1,199 a month for pools of 30,000–50,000 litres, is the right fit. If you prefer to look after the pool yourself, a sand change and a once-off clean at the start of summer is the next-best investment.

Heating the pool in the east

Heat pumps make particular sense in Pretoria East, for larger homes with space for the unit and a pool that the family wants to use from September to May. A correctly sized inverter heat pump and a cover used every night will do that; an undersized unit on an uncovered pool will disappoint.

Menlo Park, Lynnwood and the older east

Not all of the east is new. Menlo Park, Lynnwood, Lynnwood Manor and Brooklyn were built out long before the golf estates, and they have the older marbelite pools, big trees and aging plumbing to match. Leaves, tannin stains and slow leaks at the weir are the usual story here, and so are pumps that have been rewound and serviced for years.

Pools like these respond well to a good reset in winter — an acid wash, a sand change and a proper look at the plumbing — followed by regular care in summer so the stains do not come back.

The N1 run from Centurion

Getting to you, and shop deliveries

Up the N1 from Centurion, around the eastern side of the city, then off at the nearest exit — Lynnwood, Atterbury, Garsfontein, or further east for Silver Lakes and Mooikloof.

Shop deliveries are priced by the road distance from our Centurion office. Faerie Glen, Moreleta Park, Garsfontein, Menlyn and Waterkloof usually fall within 30 km, the R550 band; the estates on the far eastern edge can measure into the R650 band.
